Shelbee

Mixed Ancestry

“♥️Shelbee is a rescue doggy and we are her 3rd owners. In the 1st year of having her she had a very very bad habbit of destroying her human mommy's shoes. The more expensive the better and Nikes were her favorite. Shelbee has the stubbornness of a bulldog but will do tricks for food. Also, she loves to dress up especially for Halloween. It's hard to believe that the previous owners let her go because she is the most loving and loyal dog. Just don't mess with her food when she eats!”

Bulldog

Originally a bull-baiting dog, bulldogs today are gentle and loving while still carrying the stocky frame of their forbearers.

American Pit Bull Terrier

The American Pit Bull Terrier originated in the British Isles and descends from the Mastiff-type dogs introduced to England in antiquity. The breed was brought over to the United States by English immigrants in the 1800s, and quickly became one of the most popular and widespread breeds there.

American Bulldog

American bulldogs are enjoying a healthy increase in popularity, either as a working/protector dog or as a family pet. All over the world, they are used variously as "hog dogs" (catching escaped pigs or hunting razorbacks), as cattle drovers and as working or sport K-9s. American Bulldogs also successfully compete in several dog sports such as dog obedience, Iron Dog competition and weight pulling.

American Staffordshire Terrier

American Staffordshire Terriers are powerful but playful dogs that are both loyal and affectionate with their owners.

Health Summary

warn icon

Shelbee inherited three variants that you should learn more about.

Canine Multifocal Retinopathy, cmr1

warn icon

Shelbee inherited one copy of the variant we tested

What does this result mean?

This variant should not impact Shelbee’s health. This variant is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, meaning that a dog needs two copies of the variant to show signs of this condition. Shelbee is unlikely to develop this condition due to this variant because she only has one copy of the variant.

What is Canine Multifocal Retinopathy, cmr1?

This is a non-progressive retinal disease that, in rare cases, can lead to vision loss. Dogs with larger lesions can suffer from vision loss. CMR is fairly non-progressive; new lesions will typically stop forming by the time a dog is an adult, and some lesions will even regress with time.

Urate Kidney & Bladder Stones

Shelbee is unlikely to develop this condition due to this variant because she only has one copy of the variant.

What is Urate Kidney & Bladder Stones?

This condition causes kidney and bladder stones composed of urate. In most dogs, uric acid is converted to allantoin, an inert substance that is then excreted in the urine. Dogs with HUU have defects in the pathway that converts uric acid to allantoin. As such, uric acid builds up, crystallizes and forms urate stones in the kidney and bladder. Uric acid is an intermediate of purine metabolism. While hyperuricemia in other species (including humans) can lead to painful conditions such as gout, dogs do not develop systemic signs of hyperuricemia.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy, crd4/cord1

What is Progressive Retinal Atrophy, crd4/cord1?

PRA-CRD4/cord1 is a retinal disease that causes progressive, non-painful vision loss over a 1-2 year period. The retina contains cells, called photoreceptors, that collect information about light and send signals to the brain. There are two types of photoreceptors: rods, for night vision and movement, and cones, for day vision and color. This type of PRA leads to early loss of cone cells, causing day blindness before night blindness.

Through Shelbee’s mitochondrial DNA we can trace her mother’s ancestry back to where dogs and people first became friends. This map helps you visualize the routes that her ancestors took to your home. Their story is described below the map.

A1d

Shelbee’s Haplogroup

This female lineage can be traced back about 15,000 years to some of the original Central Asian wolves that were domesticated into modern dogs. The early females that represent this lineage were likely taken into Eurasia, where they spread rapidly. As a result, many modern breed and village dogs from the Americas, Africa, through Asia and down into Oceania belong to this group! This widespread lineage is not limited to a select few breeds, but the majority of Rottweilers, Afghan Hounds and Wirehaired Pointing Griffons belong to it. It is also the most common female lineage among Papillons, Samoyeds and Jack Russell Terriers. Considering its occurrence in breeds as diverse as Afghan Hounds and Samoyeds, some of this is likely ancient variation. But because of its presence in many modern European breeds, much of its diversity likely can be attributed to much more recent breeding.

A248

Shelbee’s Haplotype

Part of the large A1d haplogroup, this haplotype has been detected in village dogs in French Polynesia and Colombia. Among breeds, it occurs in Jack Russell Terriers, Fox Terrier Wires, and Cocker Spaniels.

The vast majority of Rottweilers have the A1d haplogroup.

The Paternal Haplotype reveals a dog’s deep ancestral lineage, stretching back thousands of years to the original domestication of dogs.

Are you looking for information on the breeds that Shelbee inherited from her mom and dad? Check out her breed breakdown and family tree.

Paternal Haplotype is determined by looking at a dog’s Y-chromosome—but not all dogs have Y-chromosomes!

Why can’t we show Paternal Haplotype results for female dogs?

All dogs have two sex chromosomes. Female dogs have two X-chromosomes (XX) and male dogs have one X-chromosome and one Y-chromosome (XY). When having offspring, female (XX) dogs always pass an X-chromosome to their puppy. Male (XY) dogs can pass either an X or a Y-chromosome—if the puppy receives an X-chromosome from its father then it will be a female (XX) puppy and if it receives a Y-chromosome then it will be a male (XY) puppy. As you can see, Y-chromosomes are passed down from a male dog only to its male offspring.

Since Shelbee is a female (XX) dog, she has no Y-chromosome for us to analyze and determine a paternal haplotype.
