“Segoni is a rescue from a wolf and wolfdog sanctuary. We have no history on the parents as they were rescue animals as well, and mom was dropped off at the sanctuary pregnant. Segoni likes howling at the ice cream man, pestering his brother and sister, and digging dens. He is a fan of nipping butts for fun and is a trickster. All things his are his, and all things yours are his. He is loving, protective (to a small extent) of mommy and his pack, and a big spoiled baby!”

Through Segoni’s mitochondrial DNA we can trace his mother’s ancestry back to where dogs and people first became friends. This map helps you visualize the routes that his ancestors took to your home. Their story is described below the map.

E

Segoni’s Haplogroup

Haplogroup E is a very rare maternal line, present primarily in Northern breed dogs and dogs with some level of recent gray wolf ancestry.

E41

Segoni’s Haplotype

The E haplogroup in general is not common. It has been found in dogs with some level of background mixing with its wolf-like ancestors.

B1

Segoni’s Haplogroup

This is a lineage that is found infrequently in dogs and may only be found in gray wolves and dogs with recent wolf ancestors. It is very different from all known dog lineages indicating a long time between the most recent common ancestor of canids in this lineage and domestic dogs.

B1.0

Segoni’s Haplotype

This haplotype has been spotted in wolves and dogs with wolf ancestry. Not only is that pretty neat, but it also helps move science forward.

The mysterious wolf hides many genetic mysteries unknown to science - like where this male lineage came from.
