ROBBIE has one copy of an FGF4 retrogene on chromosome 12 and is at increased risk for Type I IVDD. ROBBIE would also be expected to have an intermediate chondrodystrophic phenotype (slightly short legs relative to body length). Please consult with your veterinarian to discuss preventative and monitoring measures for ROBBIE.

What is Intervertebral Disc Disease (Type I)?

Chondrodystrophy (CDDY) refers to the relative proportions between dogs' legs and body. Dogs with chondrodystrophy have shorter legs and a longer body. An extreme example of this is a Dachshund or Corgi. Type I Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) refers to a health condition affecting the discs that act as cushions between vertebrae. With Type I IVDD, affected dogs can have a disc event where it ruptures or herniates towards the spinal cord. The pressure on the spinal cord causes neurologic symptoms.

What is Degenerative Myelopathy, DM?

The dog equivalent of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, DM is a progressive degenerative disorder of the spinal cord. Because the nerves that control the hind limbs are the first to degenerate, the most common clinical signs are back muscle wasting and gait abnormalities.

ROBBIE’s Haplogroup

The A4 maternal lineage is fairly rare. It is found in Cocker Spaniels, but A4 is also represented well among East Asian breeds including the Chinese Crested Dog, Shar-Pei and Shih Tzu. Moving away from Asia, it is also found among Chihuahuas (a very old breed!) and village dogs in Peru. This may be a lineage that moved into Western breeds because of their owners' tendencies to mix them up with Eastern breeds in the early modern period.

Part of the small A4 haplogroup, we see this haplotype in Central and South America, specifically Mexico and Peru. Among breeds, it is most common in Cocker Spaniels, Chinese Shar Peis, and Shih Tzus.

A2b appears to have split a few times in succession, which means that some of the Central Asian male ancestors of this lineage went their separate ways before their respective Y chromosomes made their rounds. There is not much diversity in this lineage, meaning that it has only begun to take off recently. Two iconic breeds, the Dachshund and Bloodhound, represent this lineage well. Over half of Rottweilers are A2b, as are the majority of Labrador Retrievers and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. While A2a is restricted mostly to East Asia, this paternal line is also found among European breeds.
