River

“River was adopted from a local rescue, he was presumed to be 2 years old when we got him in 2016. We were his 3rd known home. He is energetic, intelligent and loves to train and "work'. We have had some behavioral issues with him, but would never give up on him because he is our boy. We've all put a lot of work into our relationship and it has been well worth every minute.”

Embark Supermutt analysis

What’s in that Supermutt? There may be small amounts of DNA from these distant ancestors:

American Pit Bull Terrier

The American Pit Bull Terrier originated in the British Isles and descends from the Mastiff-type dogs introduced to England in antiquity. The breed was brought over to the United States by English immigrants in the 1800s, and quickly became one of the most popular and widespread breeds there.

German Shepherd Dog

German Shepherds are confident, courageous dogs with a keen sense of smell and notable intelligence. These are active working dogs who excel at many canine sports and tasks -- they are true utility dogs! Their versatility combined with their loyal companionship has them consistently listed as one of the most popular breeds in the United States.

Gray Wolf

The Gray Wolf is the largest of all the wolf species. These are pack animals that are tactical hunters. While they are wild animals, wolves are still able to breed with dogs.

Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan Malamute is a large, fluffy spitz breed recognized as being one of the most ancient breeds of dogs. The forebears to the modern Malamute crossed the Bering Strait with their owners over 4,000 years ago. Their size, thick coat, and work drive make them ideal dogs for pulling sleds, but they also make amicable companions.

Border Collie

Border Collies are highly energetic and work-oriented herding dogs, whose stamina is matched by their intelligence and alertness. While they excel at the herding they were bred for, many Border Collies also enjoy flyball, obedience, and other canine sports. A1d

River’s Haplogroup

This female lineage can be traced back about 15,000 years to some of the original Central Asian wolves that were domesticated into modern dogs. The early females that represent this lineage were likely taken into Eurasia, where they spread rapidly. As a result, many modern breed and village dogs from the Americas, Africa, through Asia and down into Oceania belong to this group! This widespread lineage is not limited to a select few breeds, but the majority of Rottweilers, Afghan Hounds and Wirehaired Pointing Griffons belong to it. It is also the most common female lineage among Papillons, Samoyeds and Jack Russell Terriers. Considering its occurrence in breeds as diverse as Afghan Hounds and Samoyeds, some of this is likely ancient variation. But because of its presence in many modern European breeds, much of its diversity likely can be attributed to much more recent breeding.

A424

River’s Haplotype

Part of the A1d haplogroup, this haplotype occurs most frequently in American Pit Bull Terriers, Barbets, and Staffordshire Terriers.

The vast majority of Rottweilers have the A1d haplogroup.

B1

River’s Haplogroup

This is a lineage that is found infrequently in dogs and may only be found in gray wolves and dogs with recent wolf ancestors. It is very different from all known dog lineages indicating a long time between the most recent common ancestor of canids in this lineage and domestic dogs.

B1.2

River’s Haplotype

This haplotype has been spotted in wolves and dogs with wolf ancestry. Not only is that pretty neat, but it also helps move science forward.

The mysterious wolf hides many genetic mysteries unknown to science - like where this male lineage came from.
