Mixed Ancestry

“Cody is almost 3 years old as of March 2020 and is very playful, loves to play chase and fetch tennis balls, and will dig in the garden if given a chance. Hesitant with strangers. Tolerant of the car and bathtime. BIG chewer, so we're loaded up with Kong toys, squeaky balls, and discarded stuffed animals. He steals socks and shoes, though!”

CODY’s Haplogroup

The A4 maternal lineage is fairly rare. It is found in Cocker Spaniels, but A4 is also represented well among East Asian breeds including the Chinese Crested Dog, Shar-Pei and Shih Tzu. Moving away from Asia, it is also found among Chihuahuas (a very old breed!) and village dogs in Peru. This may be a lineage that moved into Western breeds because of their owners' tendencies to mix them up with Eastern breeds in the early modern period.

A208

CODY’s Haplotype

Part of the small A4 haplogroup, this haplotype occurs in Chinese Crested dogs, Toy Fox Terriers, Miniature Pinschers, and village dogs in Mexico.

The popular Chihuahua breed descends from the A4 maternal line.

A2b

CODY’s Haplogroup

A2b appears to have split a few times in succession, which means that some of the Central Asian male ancestors of this lineage went their separate ways before their respective Y chromosomes made their rounds. There is not much diversity in this lineage, meaning that it has only begun to take off recently. Two iconic breeds, the Dachshund and Bloodhound, represent this lineage well. Over half of Rottweilers are A2b, as are the majority of Labrador Retrievers and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. While A2a is restricted mostly to East Asia, this paternal line is also found among European breeds.

Hc.10

CODY’s Haplotype

Part of the A2b haplogroup, this haplotype occurs most commonly in Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers, Curly-Coated Retrievers, Dandie Dinmont Terriers, and village dogs throughout the world.

A2b is found in the Daschund breed.
