Bartlet

Mixed Ancestry

“Bart (Barlet) is a rescue dog found in Memphis and now living in Chicago. He's a tender, gentle soul who loves everyone, but loves his momma most of all. When he first came home from the rescue, he was heartworm positive and very nervous about just about everything. Now, he's been heartworm free since 2015 and is the goofiest, sweetest pup you'll ever meet. He loves a good roll in the grass during the summer or a nice run around in the snow during the winter--he's a dog for all seasons!”

A1a

Bartlet’s Haplogroup

A1a is the most common maternal lineage among Western dogs. This lineage traveled from the site of dog domestication in Central Asia to Europe along with an early dog expansion perhaps 10,000 years ago. It hung around in European village dogs for many millennia. Then, about 300 years ago, some of the prized females in the line were chosen as the founding dogs for several dog breeds. That set in motion a huge expansion of this lineage. It's now the maternal lineage of the overwhelming majority of Mastiffs, Labrador Retrievers and Gordon Setters. About half of Boxers and less than half of Shar-Pei dogs descend from the A1a line. It is also common across the world among village dogs, a legacy of European colonialism.

A17

Bartlet’s Haplotype

Part of the large A1a haplogroup, this common haplotype is found in village dogs across the globe. Among breed dogs, we find it most frequently in Labrador Retrievers, Boxers, and Mastiffs.

Shar Pei dogs think A1a is the coolest!

A2b

Bartlet’s Haplogroup

A2b appears to have split a few times in succession, which means that some of the Central Asian male ancestors of this lineage went their separate ways before their respective Y chromosomes made their rounds. There is not much diversity in this lineage, meaning that it has only begun to take off recently. Two iconic breeds, the Dachshund and Bloodhound, represent this lineage well. Over half of Rottweilers are A2b, as are the majority of Labrador Retrievers and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. While A2a is restricted mostly to East Asia, this paternal line is also found among European breeds.

Hc.11

Bartlet’s Haplotype

Part of the A2b haplogroup, this haplotype occurs primarily in Border Terriers, Whippets, Jack Russell Terriers, and village dogs in the South Pacific and Croatia.

A2b is found in the Daschund breed.
